The Baltimore Orioles came into being when the St. Louis Browns decided to move to Baltimore prior to the 1954 season. By the end of the 20th century the team had been to the World Series six times, winning three of them. Their first World Champions were the 1966 team, featuring future Hall of Famers Frank Robinson, Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer.
After losing to the Mets in the 1969 World Series, the team came back to win in 1970 against the Cincinnati Reds. The Pittsburgh Pirates ruined the 1970's for Orioles fans, beating the O's in both the 1971 and 1979 World Series. Maryland got a bit of revenge against their neighbors to the north when the Orioles won the 1983 Series against Pennsylvania's other MLB team, the Philadelphia Phillies.
Baltimore's most famous player in the 1980's and 1990's was Cal Ripken. Ripken became known as the 'Iron Man' as he played day after day (after day after day), eventually surpassing Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record in 1995, finally ending at 2,632 games in 1998. The streak started May 30, 1982 and ended September 20, 1998.
